First look at NinjaBee’s Ancients of Ooga

It’s time for a first look at NinjaBee’s next Xbox LIVE® Arcade original title, Ancients of Ooga, the upcoming action-adventure platformer from development team J. Kenworthy Entertainment, the team that created Cloning Clyde. These screenshots from an early beta version of the game reveal a first look into the Oogani world where this new action-adventure platformer takes place.

Though not a sequel to Cloning Clyde, developers of the title consider Ancients of Ooga to be the classic XBLA game’s spiritual successor. The game was heavily influenced by Cloning Clyde, taking on characteristics like extremely unique gameplay, a distinct artistic style, a cast of characters bursting with personality, and a dose of random, silly humor.

“The Ooganis aren’t your typical heroes,” said Brent Fox, NinjaBee’s art director. “But that’s what makes this game so fun to play. They’re quirky, bizarre, and at times borderline foul. An Oogani’s world is centered around eating. You have to eat, chant, dance and even puke your way through the primeval land of Ooga. This is definitely the most gluttonous game you’ll play in 2010 – it’s gonna be out of this world!”

Ancients of Ooga is set in a bizarre, tribal universe where, to the Ooganis, it’s customary to eat anything you can get your hands on. Meet, befriend, and finally acquire several other zany Oogani tribes. Uncover their lost, ancient powers and exploit their abilities to lead them in a revolt against the tyrannical Boolis. There are over 50 amazing levels, great replay, plus, narcotic slugs that make you loopy!

This 2 1/2D-side-scrolling adventure is packed with puzzle solving, bad-guy fighting, ladder-climbing, catapulting, strange-object eating, puking enjoyment. Nearly anything is edible: dried wormies, charcoal, peppers, and yes, even your Oogani bothers. But be careful what you eat – while some objects can give your Oogani special powers, others won’t have such a pleasant effect.

No word yet on the release date or the price of the game come launch, but rest assured that XBLArcade.com will bring you more news on Ancients of Ooga as they become available. Until then, we’d like to hear what you think of the game so far.

A Letter from Marc Whitten: Discontinuation of Xbox LIVE for Original Xbox Games

Dear Xbox LIVE Members,

On April 15 we will discontinue the Xbox LIVE service for original Xbox consoles and games, including Xbox v1 games playable on Xbox 360 and Xbox Originals. I want to start by saying this isn’t a decision we made lightly, but after careful consideration, it is clear this will provide the greatest benefit to the Xbox LIVE community.

Seven years ago we laid out our vision for the connected console when we launched Xbox LIVE. We believed then that the power of the Internet to connect people would revolutionize living room entertainment. It started with amazing multiplayer games, and we’ve since seen that bet pay off again and again with the launches of Xbox 360, Marketplace, Netflix and powerful social features like Facebook, Twitter and Last.fm. None of this would have been possible without the success of LIVE as a multiplayer gaming network.

There’s no greater example of the power of the Xbox LIVE community than the “Halo” franchise. “Halo 2” has had an amazing run on LIVE, with a dedicated community more than five years after launch and well into the next generation of consoles. It has fundamentally changed the way we play video games. And while it’s difficult to see that run come to an end, the “Halo” franchise continues to act as the benchmark for multiplayer gaming in this generation, with “Halo 3,” “Halo 3: ODST” and soon “Halo: Reach” on Xbox 360.

Your Xbox LIVE community has grown to 23 million strong. And as we look down the road, we’ll continue to evolve the service with features and experiences that harness the full power of Xbox 360. To reach our aspiration, we need to make changes to the service that are incompatible with our original Xbox v1 games. We will contact the Xbox LIVE members directly impacted by this change and if this includes you, I encourage you to check your LIVE messages and associated e-mail account over the coming weeks for more details and opportunities. We view you as a partner in this process.

We’ll share more details soon, but in the meantime I want to assure you that the best is yet to come for Xbox LIVE. I believe we’ll look back on 2010 as a landmark year in gaming and home entertainment, and I couldn’t be more excited about what we have in store with “Project Natal” and LIVE. The LIVE community is the driving force behind everything we do, and it’s because of the community that ground-breaking experiences on Xbox continue to be possible.

See you on LIVE,

Marc Whitten

NinjaBee announces sequel to hugely popular XBLA title, A Kingdom for Keflings

It’s official. Those oddly cute, yet addictively sweet Keflings are back… in a big way. Independent video games developer NinjaBee has confirmed that A World of Keflings, a sequel to the enormously popular A Kingdom for Keflings, is coming to Xbox LIVE® Arcade in 2010.

“A World of Keflings is much more than a sequel,” said Steve Taylor, President of NinjaBee. “It’s a new game with a ton of new features, including some innovative ideas that stand out from both Live Arcade and full retail games.  A World of Keflings also has a new story focus, with new exotic lands, characters, quests, buildings, customization options, and a lot more.”

A World of Keflings is the bigger, more complete chronicle of the Kefling world where players can play as their Xbox LIVE® avatar and explore and build in the different Kefling lands. Each new kingdom has its own climate and Kefling culture. In addition, each kingdom contains its own unique resources, buildings and tech tree.

“When we set out to make a second Keflings game we decided that we were going to do it right and make it a whole new experience that clearly was bigger and better than the first,” said Brent Fox, NinjaBee’s Art Director. “A World of Keflings captures all the charm and casual-style of play of the first game, but adds more depth, humor and a ton of features players have requested.”

One of the most asked-for features included in the Keflings sequel is local multiplayer. Players will be able to build an entire world for the Keflings together with their spouse, boyfriend, girlfriend, kids, friends or whomever on the same console.

NinjaBee has been teasing concept art for the new game each week this month. To see the revealed artwork visit www.NinjaBee.com/blog/.  NinjaBee plans to release A World of Keflings later this year, though a specific release date has not yet been established.

A World of Keflings is NinjaBee’s third XBLA title to support playable avatars and is the second title NinjaBee has announced it is bringing to XBLA in 2010. The other, Ancients of Ooga, was announced last fall.

New details about Lead and Gold: Gangs of the Wild West

Coming off of the buzz surrounding the Lead and Gold: Gangs of the Wild West exhibition at the Paradox Interactive Convention, Paradox Interactive has released some new screenshots of the upcoming team-based online shooter, Lead and Gold: Gangs of the Wild West. Relive the violent era of the Wild West as it ought to be with adrenaline fuelled action and fast paced gunfights. Developed by the Swedish game company Fatshark, Paradox Interactive’s debut on the Xbox LIVE Arcade is set for a launch in early Spring 2010. So get ready to immerse yourself in this intense team based multiplayer experience drawing from a perfect mix of cool-headed player skill and the brutal close quarter brawl of the classic Western shoot out.

The main game release features four playable archetypes, each one representing a unique playing style. As the archetypes are designed to complement each other, a diverse gang is probably the most effective. Each of the player classes are designed to use their unique weaponry and traits to form a gang that is stronger than its individual members, a sum greater than the parts. The four classes include the Blaster, who wields devastating short range firepower with his double barrelled shotgun but is ineffective at long range; the Deputy, an expert at delivering high volumes of accurate fire and is deadliest at medium to long range where he can make good use of his repeater carbine; the Gunslinger, who’s speed loading a large caliber revolver is most effective at close to medium range and is proficient in fanning, a shooting technique that increases rate of fire at the cost of reduced accuracy; and finally, armed with a powerful hunting rifle, the Trapper is a master of long range sniping.

Lead and Gold – Gangs of the Wild West has a number of features to make it stand out from other multiplayer shooters. No other game in the genre takes team work to such a level as Lead and Gold – Gangs of the Wild West does. Game modes, archetype design and game mechanics are all focusing on team play. Both the maps and the game modes are designed to fit into an iconic western setting. Let’s have a look at some of the game modes you will be able to play such as Conquest, Greed, Powder Keg, Robbery and Shootout.

In Conquest, the objective is to conquer control zones in sequence. One gang advances through zones A to E while the other gang advances in reverse order, from E to A. Conquering a zone unlocks the next zone in sequence. To conquer a zone, clear it of enemy presence and stay in the zone until your gang flag is completely raised. The more gang mates present in the zone, the faster it will be conquered.

CLICK TO ENLARGE CLICK TO ENLARGE CLICK TO ENLARGE

The objective in Greed is to carry as many gold sacks to your team drop off zone as possible. A gold sack is spawned on the map and both teams struggle to bring the sack to their respective drop off zone. If a team is successful in bringing the gold to their zone they are rewarded a point and a new sack spawns at the sack spawn zone.

In Powder Keg, the attacking team must blow up the objective/objectives using powder kegs which can be found throughout the map. The defending team tries to stop them. Be careful while carrying a keg, as it can easily blow up in your face – when the sparks start to fly, get rid of the keg as soon as you can! Powder Keg is played in two rounds with each side alternating as attacker and defender.

In Robbery the players are divided into an attacking gang and a defending gang. The attackers are out to steal sacks of gold from the defenders. The defending gang must protect their gold at all costs. To reach the gold, the attacking gang is required to blow their way through using powder kegs. A Robbery match is played in two turns with each side alternating as attacker and defender.

CLICK TO ENLARGE CLICK TO ENLARGE CLICK TO ENLARGE

And finally, in Shootout is basically your standard team deathmatch which fans of the first person shooters, or in this case third person, should be all too familiar with. Though it is worth mentioning that it probably hasn’t been done all that much in a wild west setting with four different character classes and six different maps such as Bad Blood Valley, Deadwater Ranch, Devil’s Pit, Fort Turnbull, Prospectors Peak and Sinner’s Gulch.

Amongst the new game assets released is an interview with Fatshark’s Executive Producer Martin Wahlund, who describes the the exciting and fast-paced action players can expect from Lead and Gold. "The focus is on team play," says Martin, who outlines gameplay modes such as Conquest, Greed, Powder keg, Robbery and Shootout. To learn more about the types of characters and game modes, you can view the developer presentation in the video interview below:

Lead and Gold: Gangs of the Wild West Features:

• Four playable characters with a multitude of strengths and weaknesses.
• A multitude of different game modes and settings, all with a distinct feeling of the Old West.
• Lead and Gold: Gangs of the Wild West will reward players that play as a team through the incorporation of the Synergy system.
• Game modes and mechanics are designed to be easy-to-understand with a minimum of prerequisites.

To find out more about the game, you can check out our original post on Lead and Gold – Gangs of the Wild West, which includes more screenshots and the video trailer for the game. We also highly recommend you visit www.leadandgold.com and join the Lead and Gold Facebook group.

Chime coming to XBLA next week

Chime is all about placing shapes on a grid to make music. Gamers control a single shape at a time, and can move, rotate, and then place it on the grid. A beatline moves across the grid in time with the music, and sets off events when it hits placed shapes. Quads are created by placing shapes in solid blocks of 3×3 or more. When a quad is completed and the beat line hits, different musical samples are triggered dependent on its shape.

The size of the quad denotes the score, and multipliers can be achieved by having several quads on the screen at once. Once the beatline hits a completed quad, it is stamped down into the grid, earning the player coverage. Put simply, place blocks to create quads, create quads to gain coverage, and gain coverage to fill the grid.

Chime features two modes to explore and conquer; five fantastic songs by world-famous musicians – including Moby and Paul Hartnoll (Orbital); multiple difficulty levels; and different playing grids with a variety of shape-sets. Chime also offers full Xbox LIVE Arcade leaderboard support so players can impress the world with their musical talent and promote goodwill.
